Hi Matt - yes, it is the same William Wilson. I know because Dad absolutely loved your parrot. He had a board of photos at his house in the country, where he moved after he sold the house in Pine Grove, and pride of place was a photo of your parrot sitting on his shoulder. If I'm not mistaken, Billy Boy also featured in a photo with Caroline Craig of Blue Heelers and Underbelly fame. Dad loved him so much - if he hadn't been so unwell in the years before he died I was going to buy him a parrot of his own! Thanks for the message. It's good to hear from you.
It does open the door for some interesting legal developments. You express the hope that it will compel artists to engage with the works of art they're appropriating more intimately - that would be a positive outcome. The Prince case aside, though, my concern is that the legal system is not necessarily equipped to evaluate whether or not an artwork is sufficiently 'transformative'. As is often the way, the response will be to throw the proverbial baby out with the bath water and anything that references another artist's art work will be deemed to be infringing copyright. The law isn't great at measuring shades of grey.

I don't believe this ruling should "...strike fear into the collective hearts of artists worldwide..." at all. What is should do, what it hopefully will do, is force artists whose creative process is founded upon appropriating the work of others to carefully consider the depth of that appropriation and perhaps even force some engagement with the people whose work their own rests upon.

I believe the outcome was entirely appropriate and correct, and if it serves as a wake-up call to appropriationists and the galleries/agents who represent them then so much the better. A free ride which never should have been given may finally be coming to an end.

Hi Nigel - we're all about enthusiasm. Snark is so 'naughties!

The 'O' doo-dad is pretty impressive, although I didn't have the chance to give it a full work out. Too busy eating, drinking, gas-bagging and looking at art. It hangs around your neck on a lanyard, and you point it at an artwork and touch the screen. Basic information (artist, dates, title, media etc - per the standard museum label) and an image of the artwork comes up on the screen, with a series of options at the bottom, including 'artwank', which provides you with additional info if you so desire. Other functions are a 'like/dislike' option where you can vote for or against a work of art. I was chatting with Jane, and there's no telling how Mr. Walsh intends to use this data - if a work is too popular he may take it off display. Likewise, if something gets too many 'dislikes', he may rearrange the display so it's placed front and centre in the gallery. Most impressively, though, is the capacity to 'save' your visit and later link to the MONA website to take a virtual trip along your pathway. As far as I can gather, each time you view an artwork, it's recorded in the 'O' device. There's an option to 'save' your tour - if you do that at the end of your visit, you're emailed a link to the MONA website where you can view your trajectory around the museum.
